Free Dating Tips

Going on a date? We have some dating tips for you!

Ok, so you've got yourself a date. You've done a little online chatting, sent some emails back and forth, maybe met someone through a friend. And lo and behold, you have plans to meet this new and exciting person Friday night for drinks and dinner. Now all you have to do is not blow it. But how do you do that? Well, no one knows for sure, but check out a few dating tips that might just help you make your date a success:

  • Relax. You're not the only one that's nervous, so just take a deep breath and enjoy the evening for what it is.
  • Ask questions. You want your date to be interested in you, and naturally, your date wants to know you're interested in them. Asking questions is always a great way to break the ice; it's also a great way to learn more about what you have in common.
  • Don't be rude. No one likes rude people. Remember to treat everyone with respect, including the waiter that drops your Caesar salad on your lap. Rude people are a turnoff to most people; you don't want to lose a great person because you called your waiter an idiot.
  • Compliment your date. Everyone loves to be complimented, and a happy date is a good date.
  • Who pays? Well, that depends. Everyone always assumes that the man will pay-unless you're a woman who finds it offensive that in this day and age a man would dare assume it's his responsibility to cover the check. Play it by ear. You can usually figure out what the best way is to take care of what's probably the only negative of the date-paying for it.
  • Be yourself. There's no reason in pretending to be someone other than yourself, because once the truth comes out that you're not who you've projected yourself to be, that special someone might label you for what you've proven to be: Someone else! You don't want to tarnish your character by, in essence, lying.
  • Have Fun! That's what dates are about, and you should remember that before and during your date. Don't take any preconceived notions or expectations into your date, because you're probably only setting yourself up for disappointment. Enjoy yourself, and make the date enjoyable for the person you're on the date with. Even if the chemistry you're looking for isn't there, isn't it better to enjoy the evening and make a new friend, than to go home unhappy?

Tips on Writing Your Online Profile

While it may seem like a pretty straight forward and easy task, writing an internet dating site profile doesn't always turn out the way you think it might. Below you'll find some tips and suggestions for writing an internet dating profile that not only projects who you are, but points the right people (read: the people you're looking for) in your direction.

DOs

  1. Be specific when writing your online dating profile. While adjectives such as spontaneous, passionate, creative, and resourceful are commonly used to describe oneself, these words do not provide a clear picture of what you are trying to convey. Instead of writing that you are creative, you may want to write that you enjoy painting landscapes, have been working on a play about the fall of Communism, or enjoy photographing hyenas in foreign zoos. Yes, we're trying to be funny here, but you get the point.

  2. Project a positive attitude. No one wants to get involved with someone that says they're miserable, lonely, have no friends, and is easily pushed into altercations. You want to write a profile that makes you stand out as a bright star in the galaxy of the other dating profiles out there. You don't have to write sappy, over-the-top happy paragraphs, but it helps to let people know that you enjoy your life (or are trying your best to), and that you would love to have someone partake of your happy life. Meeting someone is supposed to be a good thing-breaking down the barriers and hurdles that may stop that special someone from writing you should be your main goal when writing an online dating profile.

  3. Do post good, quality, accurate pictures of yourself. Everyone has heard of (or even experienced) dates that were, to put it bluntly, disappointments. A good deal of these disappointments stem from old, or at worst, deceitful pictures being posted on someone's profile. We at Degreedate.com believe you should post recent pictures of yourself, and you should post at least three (3), and from various angles. The pictures should include headshots, full body shots, and, at best, should be taken with various backgrounds and at various times of the day (if taken outside). There is no point in putting a picture of yourself from ten years ago when you were at the prime shape of your life, and trying to pass that off as taken yesterday. Once you go out on a date, the whole charade will be over, and you'll just have yourself to blame for it. Harsh, we know, but isn't it better to have someone attracted to you for who you are now, rather than trying to con someone with the bait and switch and have them disappear altogether?

  4. Do tell the truth. There is no reason to lie on your profile, or stretch the truth in any way, shape, or form. You wouldn't like to show up to a date and be confronted with someone other than the person you had been initially attracted to based on certain criterion, only to be confronted with the fact that it was all a fabrication concocted to attract you, now would you? Well, neither would anyone else. Make sure to be as accurate and truthful as possible, not only in fairness to people searching your profile, but in fairness to yourself. If you have two children, say you have two children. If you make $25,000 a year, don't say you make $250,000. There is no point in deceiving anyone in hopes that you'll find a better match-you'll only be assuring a quicker end to a relationship you probably should never have started. You're an intelligent, attractive person, and whoever you end up with should be attracted to you for You, not for someone who doesn't exist.

DON'Ts

  1. Do not highlight or point out any of the negatives from previous relationships. Pointing out why you broke up with your last boyfriend or girlfriend only brings to light that negatives exist-negatives, unfortunately, that may be an immediate end to someone reading the rest of your profile. Sure, who doesn't have their faults? But why would you want to point them out to someone who may potentially be the person you were meant to spend your life with? We're not telling you to lie on your profile, we're just saying you should try to project a positive first impression.

  2. Do not include sexual innuendo in your online dating profile, even if you are being cute about it. Sexual innuendo is often a turn-off, even to the most sexual of people. Profiles are read a certain way by people, and dating site profiles are not the same as profiles you may find on sex-based or sexual encounter-based sites. For example, while the person reading your profile may enjoy 'Waking up on Sunday mornings and making love,' they may be turned off because they may (albeit subconsciously) immediately picture you actually making love with someone else! It's best to leave sexual innuendo for a more appropriate time and place.

  3. Do not include any personal information in your profile. What not to include:
    • Telephone numbers
    • Work address, work email, or even the name of the company where you work
    • Home address
    • Credit card numbers (although why would you?)
    • Any information that may compromise your safety or personal information in any way
