So what exactly is an online romance?
An online romance can be the smallest flirtation online such as casual email 'Hellos' and instant messages, to full-fledged expressions of love and desire. Online romances can remain 'online', or they can develop into more conventional relationships. But strictly speaking, an online romance is just that - a romance that occurs online.
Online romances never have to get personal, and, often, occur between people who are already involved in their 'real' lives with someone. They may rationalize that they are not being unfaithful, because they aren't talking or flirting with anyone 'real'. But they are not likely to admit their online 'friendship' to their significant other, either.
So how do you know you're having an online romance?
- When you think about going online, is there a certain screen name that you're keeping your eye out for, whether in an email or on a buddy list?
- Do you and your online pal 'wink' and send happy faces after cheeky sentences?
- If you're in a chat room and your buddy ignores you to talk to someone else, does it make you just a little mad?
- Do you spend a good amount of time online 'chatting' with someone you met online, the way you might chat with someone you were attracted to in person?
- Are you in a relationship with someone and 'hide' the screen when that someone comes into the room and you're chatting/writing your 'online buddy'?
- Do you think about your online chat pal when you aren't online?
If you do any or all of the above things, you probably are participating in an online romance. Online romances can be a lot of fun, and they can be exciting and healthy - just remember to keep in mind that they are not the same as conventional relationships, but can turn into conventional relationships. Sitting in front of a computer is what many of us do for work, and a lot of us do it for pleasure as well. Try to balance your time in front of a computer, either working, playing, or conducting an online romance or online dating, with quality time spent with actual, living, real people.
